Are you supposed to tip an Uber driver?

Why is ride-hail tipping so confusing?

If you’ve ever felt unsure about how much to tip your driver on apps like Uber or Lyft, you’re not alone. There’s a lot of confusion around tipping etiquette on app-based rides, and much of it can be traced back to Uber’s beginnings. As the app that made ride-hailing a thing in the first place, Uber established many of the standards around how we use those services, including the forgoing of tips. But as the ride-hail market has changed, that’s become less of a good deal for drivers.

  1. In my country, taxis are paid in cash. So I tip them with the spare change or just rounding up the fare. This is not the case with ride hailing apps.

  2. The problem with tipping is that it's the idea of a company charging customers for its service, and YET still expecting the customer to separately help pay for the company's workers. Every company should be required to pay every employee they have a living wage as a basic requisite of operating their business.

  3. I thought uber, lyft, etc provide "ride sharing" services not taxi services. It was not meant to provide full time driver job.

  4. if you dont tip your just a deadbeat scumbag….all these people saying we dont tip for this or that reason. uber is an on demand service that is less then half the cost of a cab..sometimes a third. if you get good service, which basically starts with a safe ride then tip the driver. and for foreign visitors, ever heard of the saying when in rome? all you people making excuses to exploit hard working people..shame on you

  5. Am I the only one that thinks tipping culture is a good thing? It allows customers to save money on things such as ride totals and cost of food for dinners out. It also helps to make sure that employees hold themselves accountable

  6. Yes. Most commenter her have never ever had to drive for these companies you can drive for nine hours and make $90 dollars with a bill for $20 gas. People keep saying you’re charged for the companies shortcomings. Why don’t you just walk? Oh yeah because they charge you $5 to have a personal driver pick you up and take you a few blocks. Why would anyone ever think a capitalist society would be fair.

  7. You’re not entitled to a tip, tipping is courtesy.

As for shortcomings in pay, take that up with the company, it’s not the passengers problem.

As for me, I almost always tip if the driver is friendly and I can afford it at that time. Which is 99% of the time. I tip because I want to, not out of some misguided obligation.

  8. Not Uber But I used to work as a food courier and whenever the customer tipped the base pay always dropped. There all thieves

  9. I don’t know how it is for most people but if I were to tip anyone anywhere that comes out of my food money I’d rather eat then give you money

  10. Raising Uber prices and tip pressure.

At this moment it’s almost if not the same as a cab. Might as well take a cab if it’s available at that moment.

  11. So the public should pick up the slack of greedy business owners? If we dont, we are terrible people? 😂😂🤣🤣😂

  12. Ok, I am an Uber driver, I make anywhere between $800 and $1,200 a week. Not with tips, now tips are welcomed and you should if you feel that you enjoyed your ride. It dose help me make more. If someone is not making decent money driving it means their not working at least 6 to 8 hours ,5-6 days aweek. You know like a real job would have you work. So In short if your happy with your ride tip the person. It's a good thing. Most the ppl on this thread have no clue what there talking about and especially the people from other countries. Instead of assumed in what you think you know about America , why don't you come and visit our country and see what actually goes on and how great our country is. Thank you and good day to you all.

  13. i thought that uber wasn't a "full time job" meaning that people have other jobs and do this for extra cash, so i feel tipping wouldn't be necessary but cab drivers have their job as a cab driver

  14. Your Government should just enforce reasonable minimum wages to ensure tipping is no longer required like the rest of the civilized world.

  15. Cabbies have healthcare and pensions. Uber drivers have none of this plus have to pay all maintenance and gas for the car. Yes, APP DRIVERS NEED TIPS!

  16. You're not supposed to tip anyone you're supposed to give them a donation for good service and add mandatory donations to food.

  17. I'm usually getting a ride to the airport so I ask them if they want any of my weed so I don't have to throw it out. Usually they are super stoked

  18. my problem with tipping is that only certain positions in a job get tipped. If you’re working at a restaurant, only the waiters get tips. But I’m pretty sure the cooks & cashiers make minimum wage as well, how is that fair ? Or even fast food workers, only the delivery driver gets a tip. Or what if you’re working in retail, no one gets tips in retail. So???

  19. If they went an extra mile like carrying your heavy groceries up to your place, getting to the place much earlier than ETA to where you are needed or the driver is patient enough to wait for you if you are late. I think a tip is a MUST.
